Finally, the first meetup happened.
Eleven people attended in all which is a sizable crowd for a first meeting. What is unbelievable and something I truly appreciate is that everyone arrived on time. Thanks all. The attendees were Dr.Zia with his son Nabeel and his whole family, Syem, Adnan with friend Raheel, Mr. Mohsin (brother of a ten year old with dmd), Shamael and lastly, me. We had brief introductions and greetings. I commeced the meeting with a brief discussion on how such support groups help empower, inform and energize people with needs. I then requested eveyone to tell their personal stories and experiences. Dr. Zia's story was unusual and engaging and took the first hour of the meeting. Everyone took turns sharing their unique experiences and trial and tribulations. We also had an open discussion on the genetics of md, lack of resources and information in Pakistan regarding md and unhelpful atitudes og caregivers. It was heartening to see that people could have gone on even after two hours but we had to keep a reasonable maximum time limit of two hours. Kindly post your own comments, criticism and suggestions to make the experience better for all at future meetups. |
